With the growing popularity of cooking shows like the Great British Bake Off, more and more people are experiencing the delights of cooking an baking for themselves. A good food mixer is an invaluable tool in baking and indeed the GBBO provide all their contestants with a KitchenAid mixer for their tasks. KitchenAid mixers have a reputation for being well built and expensive. The K45SS goes some way towards negating the expensive tag without compromising on built quality. So is the K45SS worth the still premium price tag?
There’s a lot to like about the KitchenAid K45SS. Aesthetically, it’s a little retro. Robust build quality combined with clean lines and organic curves make this mixer, in our humble opinion, the best looking food mixer on the market. In fact it looks good enough to leave out on the counter top all the time.
This K45SS comes with a large, stainless steel 4 ½ quart (4.26 Litres) bowl and three different mixing paddle attachments, a flat paddle for basic mixing, a kneading dough hook, and a wire whisk. These attachments can accomplish almost almost every mixing need from speed beating and whipping, to gentle dough kneading.
Each attachment is easy to engage and detach to the motor spindle. The top part of the mixer, where the motor is housed, pivots back to lift the mixing mechanism easily from the bowl. It can also be locked into place to ensure even mixing. One great feature of KitchenAid mixers is there ability to add attachments that can transform the mixer into a pasta roller and cutter, a meat grinder and mincer, a sausage stuffer, and cheese grater and slicer. These attachments do not come in the standard package and are not cheap but they do really add value to an already impressive machine.
The 250 Watt motor is powerful enough for all domestic baking tasks and has 10 different speeds, making it able to do everything from delicate kneading to heavy whipping. The bowl locks and unlocks easily to the base, which gives the user a total hands free mixing experience.
The whole mixer is covered in a durable white enamel paint. The paint holds up to the worst abuse and stays intact. The enamel coated cast iron base itself is incredibly sturdy and does not wobble or move when the mixer is in motion. The down side to this is that it is heavy. It is not easy to move around and placing it on the top shelf of your kitchen cabinet will constitute a mini workout.
Overall, the mixer is a perfect combination of form and function. Its aesthetic will add to any kitchen décor and its versatility will improve your baking experiences and results. The enamel coated body is extremely easy to clean. The smooth, white surface ensures that no liquid splashes or fly away batters stay put for very long. The motor is completely locked away in the housing, so there is no fear that the important electronics will get wet or ruined. This motor housing is also easy to clean. KitchenAid even has a solution for people who don’t want to have kitchen appliances out in the open, an attractive and modestly priced mixer cover is available for purchase separately. If you like baking, or just want to give the impression that you are good a baking, the KitchenAid K45SS is an excellent addition to anyones kitchen.
